Judiciary Safeguarding Democracy (Justice Anthony Aniagolu 5th Memorial Lectures)

Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, delivered a compelling address at the 5th Justice Anthony Aniagolu memorial lectures, shedding light on the pivotal role of a fair and independent judiciary in preserving democracy in Nigeria.

Mr. Obi lamented the diminishing respect for contracts and the rule of law in Nigeria, warning of potential societal upheaval if left unchecked. He boldly asserted that the judiciary, once a bastion of democracy, has now become a significant threat to the nation’s stability, citing concerns over its perceived transactional nature.

The event, held at the esteemed Dr. Peter Mbah Law Auditorium, Godfrey Okoye University Enugu, served as both a commemoration of Justice Anthony Aniagolu’s exemplary life and a celebration of his unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law. Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to regional development and expressed openness to insights gleaned from the lecture in shaping future policies.

Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University Enugu, Reverend Father Professor Christian Anieke, praised late Justice Aniagolu as an incorruptible jurist whose legacy continues to inspire. He highlighted Peter Obi’s selection as guest speaker, citing his spiritual connection to the late judge and the enduring impact of the lecture series in preserving Justice Aniagolu’s memory.
