INTRODUCTION

Accounting & finance is a department of the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences in Godfrey Okoye University Ugwuomu-Nike Enugu. The department offers a four-year degree (B.Sc.) in Accounting. The programme is designed to provide both an academic and professional base from which graduates may enhance their personal academic and professional development as they assume management responsibilities in either the private or public sector of the economy.

 

The B.Sc. in Accounting is acquired through course work and an original research project successfully executed by the students in their respective programmes. The department is well manned by highly qualified and experienced academic and administrative staff.

 

The programme has consistently grown from year to year producing captains of industries. It has added the postgraduate programmes which include Postgraduate Diploma (PGD); Masters of Science (M.Sc) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Accounting.

 

In the midst of the Industrial Revolution, where businesses experience unprecedented growth and expansion, resulting in a significant increase in business transactions, accounting program is poised to cushion the surge in the activity. This necessitated the development of innovative accounting techniques to effectively handle the mounting financial data. Accurate financial records play a crucial role in the success of industrial enterprises. In an industrial setting, where transactions are numerous and complex, having reliable financial records is essential for tracking and managing finances effectively. The department is highly poised to close the gap and produce relevant students with the right mental skill that are required in the industrial revolution era.

GO University dedicates itself to impart quality education aimed at inculcating in the student’s strong personality that will ensure the promotion of religious, cultural and epistemological dialogue.

PHILOSOPHY

The academic programme is developed on the basic premise that the individual is living in a modern, dynamic and monetized economy, which poses challenges and uncertainties in decision making. Hence the programme is designed to inculcate in the student the ability to identify, analyze and offer solutions to complex financial problems that may arise from the technologically changing financial environment. The programme also aims at cultivating in the student the basic work ethics that are required in a production economy that will result in self-reliance, sound moral discipline and individual actualization. Our mission and philosophy of dialogue forms the background of research and teaching in this programme.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Accounting aims at developing the necessary financial tools that will enable the individual occupy managerial financial position in Government and private sector establishment as well as room for self-employment. Commercial Banks, insurance companies, finance and investment companies, brokerage firms, commerce and industries are relevant areas into which they can fit successfully. Other major objectives of a bachelor’s degree programme in accounting are to:
  • Produce high level accounting personnel that can contribute to the development of accounting practice through research and publications;
  • Provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems relating to accounting in the management of industrial, commercial, public, and other human organizations;
  • Equip students with knowledge and skills of decision making, especially the analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining, and solving problems;
  • Develop in students, leadership and interpersonal relations skills in accounting/management;
  • Provide training aimed at improving and upgrading the existing and potential manpower needed for national development; and
  • Develop in students’ entrepreneurial skills and competencies to adequately prepare them to be innovative in creating accounting jobs especially in this era of technological advancement and disruption.

The curriculum enables the student to appreciate the significance of the capital expenditure decisions that are necessary for sustainable economic growth. Emphasis is also placed on thrift management through courses in personal financial management.

 

At the completion of four years of rigorous academic work, the students of Accounting must have acquired the necessary knowledge to cope with the challenges of the wider society.
