2019/2020 (3rd and 4th year courses)

Brief Introduction

Hello, my name is René! I went to GO Uni in 2019 as an exchange student from my hometown university in Germany. As a student of English studies, I’ve always been very interested in understanding and experiencing life all around the world. That’s why, from very early on in my academic career, I took a lot of courses in African literature and developed the wish to learn more about the topic from first-hand experience. Since GO University has a partnership with my university, I eventually learned a lot about life in Enugu and got into contact with the university which led to me visiting Nigeria for a semester abroad.

Campus Involvement

While I stayed at the university, I took great interest in enhancing my knowledge of both Nigerian and African literature and Nigerian history. That’s why I took part in a lot of courses in Nigerian history and learned a lot about Nigeria’s past and present. In addition, I also assisted with the German course that the university offers to improve their students’ knowledge.

Cultural Experiences

There are many events I took part in and experiences I collected. Two of the most memorable events I had were the cultural day at the university where many customs were presented and celebrated that people in Enugu deeply care about. It was a wonderful experience to see so many different people celebrate their origin and history. In addition, friends from the university took me to a game of the Enugu Rangers. It was cool to see the fans celebrating their team in the stadium and seeing how football is appreciated in the city.

History & English (to become a teacher)

Year Of Study

2013/2014 (at GOU)

Brief Introduction

I am Sebastian (or „Sabba Sabba“ as I was often called) and now work as a teacher in Germany. During my Uni days I got the chance to participate in a partnership program between my German university and GOU. My semester in Enugu was one of the most intense, enriching, enlightening and joyful times of my life and I thank God for all the memories I’ve made there! I am happily married to Luise whom I met during my time at a Christian union at the university in Münster – at our wedding we had a Nigerian friend as a DJ! My faith in Jesus is very important to me. I also like to meet people, do sports (running, football, cycling), travel, read a good book or watch a good movie, play around with technology and be creative.

Campus Involvement

I was involved in some Christian activities (NIFES, afternoon prayer), preached a few devotionals there; I went to the choir (we sang the, ”Champions League anthem“ and I helped with the German part); I did some drama at „Creativity day“ and I sang „Silent Night“ at the Christmas party together with the fellow student Violet.

Cultural Experiences

I went to a local wedding which was great fun! I wasn’t good at dancing, but I loved the joyful and traditional atmosphere of the Igbo wedding. During and after my stay in Nigeria, I fell in love with Nigerian literature: Achebe, Adichie, Atta, Cole and some more helped me to see Nigeria through Nigerian’s eyes and to understand the rich culture and the diverse people a bit more. As an English teacher in Germany I get to teach Nigerian literature to my students, which is a great honour and opportunity! I also loved the cultural experiences on campus, the delicious food offered by various tribes (Fufu, Egusi soup, moi moi and Plantain were my favorites) and the intercultural dialogues in smalltalk conversations. The GOU students were really approachable and always loved to chat!

Brief Introduction

I am Stephanie, some people call me Olamma. I did my BA in Geography and my MA in Development Studies. I came as a PG student and my courses at GOUni were as diverse as development itself. I like to get to know new perspectives and broadening my understanding of the world which is why I enjoy traveling and meeting new people. I also enjoy photography and nature and I care about justice and kindness.

My goal is to contribute to justice and equality in any kind of way, to continue learning, and to keep an open mind.

Extra-curricular Activities

I participated in the STEP program 2022 and received the certificate.

Campus Involvement

I was part of the Peace Conference 2022.

Cultural Experiences

I was lucky to enjoy many different (cultural) events at GOUni and outside the University. I was part of Convocation week 2022, where you might have seen me taking pictures at the marathon, the student day and lectures and heard me singing „Bunie chineke enu enu“ at Ugwuomu. Together with some of my fellow STEP students, I attended the European Business Park opening and I also had the pleasure to join events of the law week, as well as the FASA week and the Matriculation.

As a non-Catholic, I was allowed to be present at the priestly ordination, at every special service and I even read a prayer at the opening mass of the business park, for which I am very grateful. A special day was the traditional wedding of a friend and the visit to her village. In general, the Christmas period in particular was very eventful and rich in memories, with all the food, celebrations, and masquerades.
