GENDER AFFAIRS AND EQUALITY

The Directorate of Gender Affairs and Equity was first created as Office of Gender Equality Promotion in 2019.

In 2022, it assumed a full Directorate status and was renamed Directorate of Gender Affairs and Equality.

Our Mission Statement:

  • Coordinating and ensuring gender equality and equity
  • Promoting survival, social protection and development of staff and students
  • Promoting survival and social protection of persons with disability
  • Carrying out any other functions related to gender affairs and equality in the University

History is replete with literature on emphasis on women’s rights, liberation and freedom against domestic violence, sexual harassment abuse in any form. The reason women are the focus is that men use physical prowess or brawn in dealing with disagreement either in the home or elsewhere.

United Nations held that both men and women should be treated equally in social, economic and all aspects in society and not be discriminated against on basis of gender. Gender equality is one of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.

Areas thought to be the exclusive preserve of women are now having a remarkable number of men in that profession. These include but not limited to Nursing Housekeeping, cooking, catering, while women are also into engineering in various areas construction and so on.

In accordance with the mission of the Directorate, The time has come to the words, thoughts, proposal into action. We are starting with our immediate environment and reaching out to our host communities in both campuses. To actualize this dream the Gender Equality Movement was born, and our slogan is:

BREAK THE BIAS

It is the intention of the Directorate to reawaken the near dormant and passive attitude of people towards the inequality existing in gender related matters. This movement is not a fight for superiority but an acknowledgement of the cordial existence of both male and female.

To kick start this movement, University wide Sensitization program was held to show the importance and Godfrey Okoye University Gender Equality Day was celebrated on 31 May 2022.

One of the highlights was distribution of fliers to everyone. The most compelling thing in the flier is that the Directorate handles Advocacy and counselling among other things. Everyone is encouraged to say something if he/she sees something infringing on gender equality.

We can be reached either on our email genderequality@gouni.edu.ng or phone: 08037163383.
