POLITICAL SCIENCE

INTRODUCTION

The Political Science Programme in the Department of Political Science and International Students Relations offers a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. The Department also offers PGD, M.Sc. and PhD degrees in various courses in Political Science. The degree programme in Political Science is one of the degree-offering programmes that started in November 2009. It has since then graduated over five sets of students who are today scattered all over the world pursuing various areas of human endeavours.

The Political Science courses are Interdisciplinary, which involves other subjects as sociology, economics, and Psychology and are designed to equip students with the necessary theoretical foundations, knowledge and skills in Political Science.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy and mission of our Political Science programme is to produce graduates who are multitaskers, who will do a bit of everything; graduates with a critical mind, requisite ability and skill to analyse, comprehend, predict and influence the factors that shape and mould power relationships in an ever-changing socio-political environment in a globalising world. Our mission and philosophy of dialogue form the background of research and teaching in this programme.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the programme are to:
  • Provide training in the principles of political science and their application to political economy, public administration and international relations.
  • Stimulate the students intellectually through the programme in such a way that they appreciate social problems.
  • Provide a solid foundation of knowledge about the workings of society and its institutions, and develop the skills for the constructive use of such knowledge.
  • Develop in students the ability to apply political science knowledge to the resolution of societal problems and conflict.
  • Develop in students, such skills and competencies that would allow them to be self-reliant and entrepreneurial.
  • Provide the students with the necessary skills for studying and analyzing society.
  • Provide the students with the skills-based from which they can proceed to higher studies in political science.
  • Imbue in the students a deep appreciation of the political dynamics of society and the impact of this on wider socio-economic development and societal well-being.
  • To introduce students to the core concepts and theories in Political Science
  • To acquaint the students with the basic methods of political inquiry, analysis and applications.
